The only problem was that many of the images on the tapestries were of naked people. My mother’s job was to cut out—the genitals of men and women and replace these parts with flowers so they could be sold to americans. My mother saved all the pictures of the genitials over the years, and one day she sewed them together as a quilt and then she gave the quilt to me. That’s the difference between French and American aesthetics.””

- Louise Bourgeois ” Sunday Afternoons” (via fromasecondstory)

Find The Thing You're Most Passionate About, Then Do It On Nights And Weekends For The Rest Of Your Life

Find The Thing You're Most Passionate About, Then Do It On Nights And Weekends For The Rest Of Your Life:
lindstifa:

It could be anything—music, writing, drawing, acting, teaching—it really doesn’t matter. All that matters is that once you know what you want to do, you dive in a full 10 percent and spend the other 90 torturing yourself because you know damn well that it’s far too late to make a drastic career change, and that you’re stuck on this mind-numbing path for the rest of your life.

Is there any other way to live?

The Onion nails it.

Well this sure hits home. It is also a great lead-in for me to post on this week’s Thursday Theme of Bad Mistakes - which of course I can’t do right now because I have to go do other stuff.

Indeed. As we’ve seen so many times recently, The Onion made a piece of satire so good it physically hurts.

But.

I have to present the other side of it, too, which is that for many of us, doing only the things we love would drive us into a life of near-poverty. And I make no judgement on those who do make that choice; in fact, good for them. I have friends who’ve made this choice and I support them fully. It’s not the choice for me, though. (Maybe I’m just not as good at is as they are, and I really fear that I wouldn’t even get up to the level of near-poverty. I’ve considered that, too.) By the way, when you have other souls you willingly choose to provide for, the calculus changes even further.

What the Onion piece does, and yes I know it’s satire, is an example of the fallacy of the excluded middle. It is possible to have a career that you don’t hate, at least, and a life that’s less than 90% torture, and that still leaves ample time for that which fulfills. It’s not an either/or proposition.

Maybe this is just what I tell myself to keep getting out of bed every day. Maybe I’m just rationalizing to make myself feel better. Maybe I’m just like my mother; she’s never satisfied.

I did the nights and weekends when I could afford to work only one job for over twenty years. Then my son grew up and left home, and I fucking made it happen.

I’m broke. Broke as fuck, I’m isolated, I hurt physically, I’ll be buried in a pauper’s grave, but I am happier than I’ve ever been, especially knowing I’m not taking the Boy down with me.

Patience, my pretties. You get another chance. Be ready to seize that motherfucker.

When I left my corporate job to work at the cheese shop I took an 80% pay cut. I am broke to the point where I had to borrow money in order to pay rent a couple of months ago.

It’s been the best year of my life and I wouldn’t give it back for the world.

I feel like the vast majority of people have a misunderstanding about the way life works. You can have (within reason, of course!) ANYTHING you want. You just can’t have EVERYTHING you want.

Want to weave baskets for a living? Awesome. You might just be sharing a studio apartment with 4 other people and eating ramen.

Want to make an obscene amount of money? Cool. You can do that too, although it may require racking up lots of student loan debt and letting your friendships and health fall by the wayside as you singularly pursue that particular objective—you can certainly do it.

Want something else, something in-between? That’s cool, too—but there are checks and balances you’ll have to keep in mind. You might not be able to basket-weave full-time AND carry a mortgage in a safe neighborhood AND feed and care for a child…so you might have to get a job in another industry and basketweave on the weekends if you decide that a mortgage and having a child (for instance) are actually more important to you than doing nothing but basketweaving for work forever and ever Amen. The checks and balances part is hard. It requires a lot of soul-searching, a lot of mistakes, a lot of compromise, a lot of sacrifice. And that seems to be the part people object to—the not being able to have it all, simultaneously, thing.

(I think the other people on this thread have done a bang-up job of redefining what’s important to them and what they want in life, BTW…I just am eye-rollingly tired of seeing this story pop up on my feeds because waaah waaah I have to give things up to get things and can’t pay for my nice apartment and nice car and multiple nights out a week and swanky vacations and brand-name clothing on a basketweavers’ salary waaah waaah.)

sleepydumpling:

Food is not an addictive substance.

It is my position that disordered eating behaviours (like purging, restricting, or binge eating) can be like behavioural addictions, but food itself is not an addictive substance, and eating is not inherently a behaviour of addiction. Salt is not addictive….

from The Invisible War

This is exactly how it happens too.

Oh they’ll preach that SAPR shit all day fucking long, call us into bullshit All Hands meetings every Thursday, encourage the liberty buddy policy until they’re blue in the face but the MINUTE a woman reports a rape and it happens to be Blue-on-Blue (meaning Navy-on-Navy), they start acting skittish, they start questioning you, making you doubt your own trauma, making you feel embarrassed, making you feel like it’s your fucking fault.

I literally hold that the military is the ultimate bastion of every despicable injustice known to man, and I unfortunately work for them.

But I’ve overheard officers and enlisted superiors talking about this, and how dismissive they are, claiming that most of the women that report cases are lying and trying to ruin the man’s life.

And let’s not even start on how they treat the same-sex cases.

If the answer is Daddy, as it was 26 percent of the time when these numbers were last released, in 2005, and 32 percent of the time in 2010, the Census Bureau calls that “care.” But if Mom is caring for a child while Dad’s at work, that’s not a “child care arrangement,” but something else.

NYPD Enters Building Without A Warrant, Breaks Landlords Leg And Handcuffs Her To Hospital Bed For 17 Days

A Brooklyn landlord says she was shackled to a hospital bed for 17 days after cops broke her leg during a wrongful arrest in the hallway of her Flatbush building.

Karen Brim, 42, claims an NYPD officer threw her to the ground, severely fracturing her left leg, after she identified herself as the owner of the Utica Avenue building and asked why the cops were there, according to a new lawsuit.

The single mother was arrested and brought to Kings County Hospital, where she needed multiple surgeries, plates and screws to fix the bones broken in a tussle with Officer Timothy Reilly.

Adding insult to injury, court papers say, was the way police restrained her for more than two weeks during her hospital stay, with one officer posted outside her room.

“She was hand- and ankle-cuffed to her hospital bed,” lawyer Marshall Bluth told The Post. “They would not allow family or friends to enter. She wasn’t presented before a judicial hearing officer for 17 days. It was pretty egregious.”

A state court spokesman said the 24-hour standard for arraignment in criminal cases doesn’t apply when defendants are hospitalized.

But Brim was conscious and incapable of fleeing because of her injuries and could have been arraigned at any point, Bluth said.

“She’s not a flight risk. She cannot run out of the hospital. There’s no need to handcuff and ankle-cuff her. Being handcuffed to a bed — it’s like being a caged animal. It’s outrageous,” he said. “It’s beyond belief. Not for one day, not for one week, but for 17 days?”

The confrontation with cops unfolded on April 30, 2012, when Reilly, Officer Ralph Giordano and an unidentified partner spotted four neighborhood teens hanging out on a roof adjacent to Brim’s building. They chased the youths into Brim’s building, entering via the roof, as Brim was mopping a hallway, according to a police source and Brim’s Brooklyn federal court lawsuit.

Brim claims things got physical when she protested that the kids were visitors and not trespassing.

Cops maintain that Brim was the violent one — swinging a broom at Reilly, smacking him in the head and putting her hand around his neck, according to a criminal complaint.

The cops arrested the teens — Brenado Simpson, Clifton Bailey, Robean Romans and Distephano Destin — for trespassing. The charges were later dropped, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said.

Brim was charged with assault, resisting arrest, menacing, harassment and obstructing governmental administration. Her criminal case is pending.

Brim insists in court papers the cops lied.

“She’s mopping the common areas, as she does once every two weeks or so, and suddenly police officers descend from the roof into her building and proceed to beat her up, basically,” Bluth said. “No one really knows for sure why they did this. They basically stormed her building.”

The cops did not have a warrant, according to Brim, who’s owned the three-story building for more than a decade and operates a beauty salon on the first floor.

Brim is seeking unspecified damages in her lawsuit, which accuses the officers of using “unnecessary and unreasonable” force, false arrest, falsifying evidence and violating her constitutional rights.

It was the second time in a year officer Reilly was accused of being violent with the public. Brooklyn resident Samuel Semple sued the city last year after Reilly allegedly “forcibly dragged” him out of a restaurant. Semple, who suffered minor injuries, got a $10,000 settlement in January.

The city will review Brim’s allegations once it gets a copy of the lawsuit, a Law Department spokeswoman said.

This is insane.

I still hate that shit.

I still hate that shit.

Farewell, Fung Wah (by NewYorkerDotCom)

Farewell, Fung Wah (by NewYorkerDotCom)

blua:

Anita Sarkeesian faces backlash for disabling Youtube comments.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, people are taking to the Internet to complain about Anita Sarkeesian. The first installment of her long-awaited video series about sexism in video games was released yesterday, inspiring an inevitable torrent of backlash. Aside from suggestions that she “stole” the Kickstarter funding for the Women vs. Tropes in Video Games series, much of the criticism is because she disabled comments on the YouTube video.

[…]

Leading the charge against Sarkeesian’s decision is Tumblr user amazingatheist, who posted a ten-minute video entitled “Who’s The Damsel Now?“ Arguing that Sarkeesian’s “censorship” of YouTube comments counteracts her message about strong women, and that her TED talk about online harassment amounts to “whining,” amazingatheist says:

“What are you afraid of, Anita? Why can’t people have a discourse about your material? Why can’t people make their opinions towards your content known? I understand that some comments will be abusive in nature — probably most will — but so what?”

Ironically, the existence of this response means by definition that amazingatheist is making his opinion known, as well as participating in a discourse about Sarkeesian’s material. [READ MORE]

The amazingatheist destroyed his own chance at participating in these discussions by being a misogynistic MRA. Just in case, that link needs a trigger/content warning so TW: rape, misogyny, abusive language.

The woman got bombarded with rape and death threats when she talked about the idea of doing this series. And people are up in arms about her not wanting to deal with that during her actual work??

So aside from the misogyny aspect here (and that isn’t to downplay it at all, because holy fucking shit you ASSHOLES,) I would like to point out something that appears to be lost on 95% of the denizens of The Intertubes:

No one is required to let you air your opinion in their space.

This includes the comments section of anything they upload to YouTube.

Seriously, the number of people who think that they are somehow owed the right to comment on things boggles me. You want to bitch about someone’s videos, comment on news articles, disagree with someone’s Facebook post? Go do it in your space. No one owes you shit.

And in particular, no one you are abusive and violent toward owes you shit.

Bolded for real talk.

SHEEE WON’T LET US DISRESPECT HER?!?!?! HOW FUCKING DARE SHE?!?!

I just can’t.

THE BOLDED IS 100% IMPORTANT AND INTEGRAL. No one is entitled to this EVER EVER EVER.

Yes times a million.

Photo
